Bolsover is a bustling and busy market town with a rich heritage and plenty going on – making it a great choice for house buyers looking for a new home in Derbyshire.
It’s a growing town, with a population of around 80,000, but has retained the unique charm and character which makes it such a great place to live.
Its most striking feature is Bolsover Castle, an English Heritage property and Stuart era mansion that offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the restored wall walk. The venue plays host to a variety of events all year including storytelling, exhibitions, and re-enactment days.
The Derbyshire town was granted its first market charter by Henry III in 1225. Today, the market operates in town every Tuesday and Friday. Plus, there is a monthly artisan market which is held on the first Saturday of the month, offering an array of food and crafts.
With independent shops and high street chains, there is a lot of variety whether you’re browsing or looking for something specific. For your regular supermarket shop there’s a Morrisons on Oxcroft Lane. And for something a bit different, visit Old Bolsover Yard at the back of 2 Castle Street, behind the Coffee Cup café. It’s home to some new creative businesses.
After your shopping, why not try out one of the local cafes, such as the Euphoria Bistro at Town End or The Pump, which is a tearoom in a renovated 18th Century cottage on the Market Place.
Bolsover is well placed for getting around as it’s only four miles from junction 29A of the M1. It’s also only a 20-minute drive from Chesterfield railway station, which has direct services to London, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Leeds.
There are good schools in the area such as The Bolsover School on Mooracre Lane, which is a secondary school and part of the Redhill Academy Trust.
The town has an array of clubs and groups catering for a wide variety of hobbies and interests. Bolsover Camera Club meets every Friday at Bainbridge Hall. St Sebastian Archers, which is based at Bolsover Town Football Club fields, has members that shoot for fun or competition, and it prides itself on its friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Bolsover and District Cycling Club offers a range of activities including cycle speedway and mountain biking. Bolsover Drama Group is one of Derbyshire’s largest amateur dramatic groups and puts on four shows a year and has a youth section too.
There are also plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the countryside. On the outskirts of the town is Carr Vale Nature Reserve. It is a wetland reserve that attracts many bird species throughout the year including wigeon, finches, buntings and water rail.
Poolsbrook Country Park is just a 15-minute drive away and includes walks, woodlands and lakes, sand play areas for children, and four miles of trails for cycling, horse riding and walking. Refreshments are available at The Coffee Stop Café in the Pavilion.
