A much-loved soldier from Handforth who was killed on his second tour of Afghanistan has been honoured in the name of a new road near his home.
Local housebuilder Jones Homes has paid tribute to local hero Lance Corporal Jamie Webb at its Sanctuary Wilmslow development in Wilmslow, by naming the gateway to the new community Jamie Webb Drive.
L Cpl Webb’s parents Susan and David and brother Luke, along with a group of uniformed soldiers and veterans, many of whom served alongside Jamie in the 1st Battalion of the Mercian Regiment attended a ceremony held by the housebuilder to celebrate the naming of the new road.
The family were presented with a replica of the street sign at the event, which gave those attending the opportunity to share their memories. L Cpl Webb died in March 2013 aged just 24 following an attack on his patrol base in Helmand Province.
Luke Webb, L Cpl Webb’s brother, said: “We are really honoured and proud to have a road named after Jamie. We really want to thank Jones Homes for all their help and all the hard work that they have put into this day.
“Jamie was a true hero and It’s great that he is being commemorated in the naming of this road. Future generations will pass this road and will remember him.
“It’s more than just a road sign to us, it’s a memorial, another way to celebrate Jamie’s life. It means so much to us that the sacrifice that Jamie has made will not be forgotten.”
L Cpl Webb served in the British Army for six years, enlisting at age of 18. In this time, he was deployed on four operations, firstly to Northern Ireland, then to Iraq, followed by two tours of Afghanistan. He was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal after his first tour of Afghanistan.

“I would like to thank all the soldiers and veterans from both the Mercian Regiment and the Cheshire Regimental Association who have attended this dedication naming ceremony and are able to share the memories of Jamie with the family.”

Jones Homes has funded a new beehive to support Heron Hill Primary School in Kendal’s latest ecological project.
The company’s £300 donation has enabled the school to purchase the equipment to enhance its already impressive apiary.
The school has assembled its own ‘Bee Team’ to lead the project, which has been in progress for over three years. The aim is to enhance learning opportunities for the children while increasing their understanding of the ecological system around them.
Jacqui Cottam, who is chair of governors at Heron Hill Primary School, is a registered beekeeper who helps to run the Bee Club for pupils in Year 4 to Year 6. She said: “The children are very excited about the hive and can’t wait to see our bees buzzing around their new home.
“It really will have far-reaching positive benefits, not just for our children, but so many of the Kendal community who come to visit the apiary.”
The long hive requires far less heavy lifting than the hives currently being used by the Heron Hill Bee Team, meaning that disabled children or children with limited mobility can now take part in activities there.
The hive has been built by Green Earth Hives, who specialise in educational and accessible beehives.

A St Helens teacher has taken a step up the property ladder after selling her previous home in just nine days thanks to Jones Homes’ Agency Assist scheme.
Emma Mather, 33, who teaches health and social care used the housebuilder’s Agency Assist scheme to help secure her move to the Eccleston Grange development in Eccleston, St Helens.
Under the scheme, Jones Homes will hold a reserved plot for up to eight weeks while instructing an independent estate agent to market the buyer’s existing property on their behalf.
While the average time it takes to sell a home in the North West is 66 days*, a buyer was found for Emma’s house in just over a week.
Having previously lived in a new build home just around the corner from Eccleston Grange, Emma had seen the development taking shape and occasionally visited to have a look round.

A Roman road, the remains of Anglo-Saxon pit-houses and copper artefacts from the Stone Age were among the fascinating discoveries made by archaeologists at the site.
The findings were uncovered during an excavation of the 9.8 acre site off Worksop Road, ahead of construction work beginning on the 53-home development.
Reuben Thorpe, Head of Field Archaeology at Archaeological Research Services Ltd, which conducted the excavation, said: “What we appear to have here is an exciting multi-phase site of regional significance that encompasses activity from the late Neolithic period right through to the late Medieval period.”
The oldest features on the site were tribal boundaries dating back to the Neolithic period, the final part of the Stone Age which ended in around 6500 BC. Copper alloy artefacts, including pins for cloaks and dresses, from the same period were also among the findings.
Evidence of human activity from the Roman period was also uncovered, in the form of a Roman road which ran through the site, a Romano-British well structure and fragments of Romano-British pottery.
Mr Thorpe added: “The fragments of Romano-British pottery pressed into the upper surface of the road indicate that it was likely in use during the period and it is suggested that the road here represents part of the wider landscape narrative of Roman colonisation and organisation of the area.”
Two possible Anglo-Saxon Grubenhaus, or pit-houses, were uncovered as well as pottery and a brooch from Medieval times.
David Ruffley, Regional Director for Jones Homes Yorkshire, said: “The excavation of the Van Dyk Village site has uncovered some remarkable objects of great historical significance which may well have gone undiscovered without this new development coming forward.
“We are proud to have supported the excavation and we have been amazed by the findings. It’s quite remarkable to think that when the first residents at Van Dyk Village move into their new homes they will be the latest in a long line of settlers dating back 7,000 years.”
Jones Homes has launched its new Cavendish Park development in Bolsover following the success of neighbouring Cavendish Grange.
