If you’re looking to move near Sheffield or Rotherham, yet wish for the calm of rural village life, then a new home in Thorpe Hesley might offer the best of both worlds.
The village has a population of just over 4,000, nestled in the heart of the South Yorkshire countryside, yet homes in Thorpe Hesley are only four miles from Rotherham and eight miles from the bright lights of Sheffield.
This is a great place to bring up a family. Working parents will be happy to learn that Brookhill Nursery in the village provides pre-school education and care in a home-from-home environment. The highly regarded Thorpe Hesley Primary School in Upper Wortley Road is right next to Wentworth View.
Older pupils are well-served by Ecclesfield School, just two miles away in Ecclesfield.
Looking after the health of residents is Thorpe Hesley Surgery, which offers a number of GP services and is on the same site as the supporting facility of Well Pharmacy.
Trinity Community Centre is the beating heart of the local community and offers up a range of activities which help make village life so special. The centre, which is also home to the library, provides classes and sessions as varied as art and drama, exercise, badminton, knitting, a book club, and even a Lego club.
In terms of shops and other services, the village has a convenience store and post office, hairdressers, takeaway restaurants and a choice of pubs. For the weekly supermarket shop there are Aldi and Morrisons stores just two miles away in Ecclesfield.
For a day out shopping, you can choose between the giant retail mecca that is Meadowhall in Sheffield or Parkgate Shopping Centre in Rotherham, which are both just over five miles away.
Travelling further afield could not be easier as Thorpe Hesley is less than a mile from junction 35 of the M1 for Barnsley, 10 miles away, Huddersfield, 24 miles, and Leeds, 30 miles. The train station in the neighbouring village of Chapeltown provides services to Huddersfield, Sheffield and Leeds.
Without doubt the most famous local landmark is Wentworth Woodhouse – a glorious Grade I-listed country house which has had many a starring role in movies such as The Darkest Hour and Downton Abbey and a number of TV series, including Victoria and The Irregulars. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the incredible State Rooms in the house, stroll through the gardens which feature wildflower meadows, ancient trees and 18th Century follies or treat themselves to afternoon tea in the Long Gallery.
Neighbouring Wentworth Garden Centre – which occupies the former great kitchen garden and pleasure grounds of the Wentworth Woodhouse estate and features two restaurants, a family farm, an adventure playground and historic gardens – is also a popular local attraction.
Thorpe Hesley is a great place to enjoy the great outdoors, surrounded by leafy countryside with lakes, woodlands and nature reserves within easy striking distance, with the 417 acres of nearby Greno Woods perhaps the pick. And of course, it’s only a 20-minute drive before you find yourself in the stunning Peak District National Park.
