‘We’ve done it!’ Couple move 130 miles north for new life in Derbyshire

A couple who moved 130 miles north into their new home at Jones Homes’ Cavendish Park development in Bolsover were determined to get everything just as they wanted it without delay. So, with an army of helpers and a lot of determination, as well as working through the night, Lauren and Max Barber moved in, wallpapered two rooms, decorated the rest of the house with pictures, and new furniture, and unpacked all 62 boxes in three days. Their three-year-old son Charlie stayed with relatives while all this activity was taking place, but by the time he arrived at his new home, everything was complete. Lauren said: “Charlie walked into his new dinosaur decorated bedroom and said ‘wow’. “By the end of that day it looked like we had been there for months. We sat down with a glass of wine and thought ‘we’ve done it!’” Arranging the move had been a long-distance process because the couple were moving 130 miles north from Oxford to be nearer to Lauren’s family. The move to Derbyshire also meant they could have a much larger house for their money, making it easier to accommodate visitors and longer stays for Max’s family. They purchased a four-bedroom house in Jones Homes’ Hollin design, which features a wide kitchen/family/dining room with doors leading to the garden, a utility room, study and living room, and four double bedrooms, bathroom and en suite shower room. Now that Lauren and Max have moved in along with Charlie – and the family’s Bengal cats Percy and Penny, tortoises Phyllis and Myrtle, mice Betsy, Patty and Ginger and a fully stocked fish tank – all the effort has been worthwhile. The couple paid tribute to the help of sales advisors Jas and Lyndsey who made it easy to progress the purchase despite them living such a long distance away. Lauren said: “They were very supportive, and they had the attitude of ‘what can we do to make this work’.” One of the aspects that made things easier was Jones Homes’ Agency Assist scheme, which allowed them to select the home they wanted and have the housebuilder hold it for them while through the scheme a buyer was found for their three-bedroom semi-detached house in Oxford. Max said: “There were a lot of things to consider because we were moving a long way, but Jas and Lyndsey were helpful and supportive, and I felt they got to know us really well as a family and were interested in us. The customer service has been amazing.” Lauren also praised site manager Carl. “He is so friendly and such a nice guy. They all work really hard on site, all the builders and plumbers, everybody. We have had such a nice experience.” Their new house gives them much more space, and the design works well for the family. Max said: “The way this house is set out is really practical for us with a toddler.” Lauren added: “In our old house we were always looking for space saving ideas and it got to the point we couldn’t live comfortably there. But here we have more space than we know what to do with. We are not on top of each other, and we have nice breakout areas if you need quiet time, or if Charlie wants to do something loud it doesn’t disrupt the whole house.” In fact, the couple looked at a larger five-bedroom house on the development, but decided that while they could have afforded it, the four-bedroom property was quite large enough. They have found their new area to be very friendly, and with the Derbyshire countryside on their doorstep as well as Chesterfield and Sheffield within an easy drive, they have everything they need nearby. Lauren said: “The nice thing about Bolsover is that within 15 minutes we can drive and be climbing the peaks or at the reservoir. Any Derbyshire landscape wouldn’t take long to reach, and Poolsbrook Country Park is perfect for Charlie.” With family nearby too, it has all made for a very welcome change of pace. Lauren said: “We have slowed down a little bit. People are more relaxed here and having more space and less stress and more support from family, means life is much more relaxed. “It’s changed our lives” – couple buy new house at Cavendish Park after 35 years in their old place

A Derbyshire couple who had lived in their previous home for 35 years made the decision to buy their new house in an instant. Judith and Steve Short looked around the four-bedroom detached property at the Cavendish Park development in Bolsover and immediately fell in love with it. So they reserved it there and then and became the 100th household to move into a new home at the development. Jones Homes gifted the couple a personalised bottle of champagne to celebrate them being the 100th completion on the site. And the couple certainly don’t regret their decision, saying: “It has changed our lives completely.” Judith said: “After we looked at it, we got in the car and started to talk about it and he said, ‘I love it’, and I said, ‘I love it’, and he said, ‘let’s go back in the office.’ It was a quick decision and the right decision.” They had looked at quite a few houses before that without finding anything they wanted, but Judith said: “This one ticked all the boxes.” Judith, 66, a retired Patient Services Manager at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, and Steve, 68, who runs a business maintaining machinery for the recycling industry, began looking for a new home because they wanted something more manageable with a smaller garden. They previously lived in a three-bedroom house with a lot of land around it, a mile away from their new property. Though this house, built in Jones Homes’ Hollin B style, is larger than their old place it works better for them. One of the best things is having a study, Judith said, because everything to do with Steve’s business is contained in that room so the couple can close the door on it at the end of the working day. “We can go in there and do the work and not have laptops scattered around the house and paperwork on the dining table,” she said. They also love the kitchen/dining room, which is spacious and has a breakfast bar – perfect for when the couple’s four daughters and seven grandchildren pay them visits. Judith said: “One of the main things that we wanted was a dining kitchen because I like to cook, and I like to entertain. That’s our lifestyle. The girls come and I do the cooking and we have the grandchildren here. It’s a sociable area. When we first visited the house, we were blown away when we came into the kitchen. It’s just perfect.” But the room she likes best is the bedroom with en suite shower room because it is all so spacious and well designed. In fact, the design of the whole house works for them and makes life easier. “It’s changed our lives completely,” she said. “It feels like it’s easier living. Everything is in the right proportion and the right place. Everything is where you would put it if you were designing your own house. It’s perfect.” They were very pleased with the customer service they received both from the sales advisors and the site team, who were friendly and efficient in all they did. And the sales office has become something of a hub for the neighbours as there has been a Macmillan cake sale there and a mulled wine and mince pie event at Christmas so that all the new residents could get to know each other better. Judith said she met new neighbours there on both occasions and a real community spirit has grown. “They are keeping this little community in touch with each other.” Judith admits she wondered if it might be a wrench to leave the home they had lived in for so long and where they had brought up their family. But though there are a lot of memories attached to the old place, on moving day her thoughts were all about the new beginnings. She said: “I never looked back. I didn’t get upset. Jones Homes hosts coffee mornings to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support

Jones Homes Yorkshire raised money to support people and families affected by cancer by holding five fundraising coffee mornings. The events, attended by Jones Homes colleagues, residents and members of the public, were held as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Refreshments and cakes were served at four developments – Beaumont Grange in Treeton, Wentworth View in Thorpe Hesley, Cavendish Park in Bolsover and Gateford Park in Worksop – as well as at Jones Homes Yorkshire’s regional head office in Cleckheaton, raising a total of £325. Jayne Swift, Sales and Marketing Director for Jones Homes Yorkshire, said: “It was a pleasure to support Macmillan Cancer Support in its work by holding coffee mornings to raise money we are most grateful to our wonderful residents and current home buyers for baking and supporting us on the day, everyone who attended enjoyed socialising over cake and a cup of tea or coffee. “The money raised will go towards supporting those who have been impacted by cancer. It means a lot to us to be able to help a good cause, whilst also doing something which brings together the local community within the developments we are building.” Cakes were provided by the sales advisors at each of the developments, with a range of homemade and shop-bought treats offered to guests.

Elsa and family set to create their own memories in spacious new-build home at Cavendish Park

The thought of moving into a more spacious family home had been on Elsa Robinson’s mind for some time. But it was only when she fell pregnant with her second child that she resolved to make the prospect a reality. The 37-year-old psychologist and her husband Simon, 39, got the keys to their new four-bedroom detached house at Jones Homes’ Cavendish Park development in Bolsover in October last year – just eight weeks before the arrival of their baby daughter. The couple had been living with their young son, 2, in a four-bedroom, three-storey townhouse in Rotherham. But the layout of the property wasn’t ideal for a young family, especially one with a new member on the way. Elsa said: “Our thought of buying a new house was all fast tracked when I became pregnant with our second child. We wanted to move before the due date, so we could get settled in before the baby came. “We wanted a new build as that would allow us to put our own stamp on the property. We also wanted plenty of space for the children to grow up in and to create our own memories in.” They found Jones Homes while searching for houses online and booked a viewing at one of their show homes. “Their developments stood out to us with their style and quality of finish. They reserved their new four-bedroom Bayswater house with a baby on the way, Elsa was especially keen for the moving process to be as stress free as possible. They really did help make the process smoother for us.” Something else which made life easier for the now heavily pregnant Elsa was moving into a new-build house which required minimal work to get it ready for living in. “By the time we got the keys, I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant. All I wanted to do was nest in my new home and prepare to have the baby.” Fast-forward 8 months and the couple are now happily settled in their new home with their two children, their dog, Koji, and cat, Poppy. Elsa says the family are particularly enjoying the extra space and better layout that their new house offers. “Even with all of us in the house at the same time, there is still lots of room available for us to have our own space. My husband works from home in the downstairs study whilst I am off on maternity leave for a few more months. “At the same time, I feel more at ease knowing that all our bedrooms are on the same floor, unlike in our previous home.” Elsa’s favourite room in the house, however, is the kitchen and dining room. She said: “The combined kitchen-dining room is very spacious and bright, perfect for cooking in and eating together as a family. There is also a breakfast bar and large french windows overlooking our south-facing garden.” As well as the house itself, the family are also loving their new location. “One factor that was important was having places to walk Koji and to take the kids outside to. We are only a short drive away from Creswell Crags and Poolsbrook Country Park, and there is Bolsover castle, which often has events on, here too. It is also only a short drive to Sheffield, so we can get to a big city and places like Meadowhall quite easily. “With a young baby we don’t really go out as much as we used to at the moment. When the kids are a bit older it will be good to go out and explore more of Bolsover and the area around us.” The couple recently secured a place at a local nursery for their little boy and are already thinking ahead to when their children will be old enough to go to school. Elsa said: “There was a range of nurseries for us to choose from in the local area, and we are very happy with the nursery that he has recently started attending. “There is also a range of primary schools available for when the kids get to that age. Jones Homes nears completion of new neighbourhood in Golcar

Century View in the Yorkshire village of Golcar is nearing completion, with homebuilder Jones Homes set to finish work on the final homes in the second phase of the development. This phase, on a 1.8-acre site off Swallow Lane, has brought 21 sustainable homes to the village, as well as more than £80,000 of investment in local services and infrastructure. The first phase previously saw 19 homes built on an adjoining parcel of land. A new community has taken shape at Wentworth View in the South Yorkshire village of Thorpe Hesley. Jones Homes has finished building 144 new homes at the development, off Upper Wortley Road, following a five-year build programme. The first residents moved into their new homes in 2021, putting down roots to establish what is now a close-knit neighbourhood. Couple buy new home in the country and swap sound of police sirens for birdsong

Matt Hawkins and Keeley Shakespeare have swapped the sounds of urban living for the peaceful twitter of birdsong. The couple have moved from a two-bedroom home in the town of Pontefract and bought a four-bedroom house at Jones Homes’ Teasel Green in the village of Eggborough. Matt, a 33-year-old accountant, and Keeley, a 30-year-old trainee midwife, wanted to upsize but also to move away from a town environment and into a rural setting. “Keeley moved into my place in 2023 and we very quickly realised that it was not big enough for the two of us, especially as I had to work from home part of the week,” said Matt. “My two-bedroom house was perfect as a sort of bachelor pad for me on my own but was no good for both of us together. “In early 2025, we started to look at trying to find a new home and my mum told me that Jones Homes were building new homes in Eggborough. I did my research and could see that Jones Homes were renowned for the quality of their properties which looked so much better than your standard new-build house. “We went along to Teasel Green and met the sales advisor Janette. She gave us a tour of the Bentley show home and we both fell for it instantly. To be honest, we were blown away by how fabulous it looked especially the huge kitchen/dining/living area. As we went from room to room in the house, we kept turning to each other and smiling. “We both knew straightaway that this was the house we wanted to live in. As we walked around the development we were struck by how quiet and peaceful it was. You can get onto the M62 very easily and living here has only put about 10 minutes on our commute. “So, we now have the best of both worlds. We are living out here in the lovely countryside but can easily and quickly get into Leeds, with the towns of Pontefract and Selby very close by. It’s an ideal location. “Our favourite space in the house, and the one where we spend most of our time, is the kitchen/dining/living space which spans the entire back of the house. It has bi-fold doors to the garden and three Velux windows in the roof so it is bathed in lots of natural light. “We love to host and entertain and we had absolutely no room at the old house but here we have the perfect space. We have had family and friends over and it’s lovely to be able to cook and chat and for everyone to be in the one area. There’s a TV and sofa which is a perfect place for the children to be while the adults get on with preparing the food.” The couple are enjoying having more room and have turned one of the spare bedrooms into a home office for Matt. “At the old house, I had to set up in the back bedroom which had a bed in it, and it never felt like a professional working space,” said Matt. “But here I have a dedicated office and it works really well. It’s a much calmer atmosphere to work in and when the day is done, I can shut the door and that is that. “Our main bedroom is huge and has a fabulous en suite which feels so luxurious. We have future-proofed our life because we hope to start a family and bring up children here and already have the space to do that. “Life is wonderful now. We love our new house and are very proud to call it our home. It is incredibly well finished and has massive kerb appeal too. Jones Homes celebrates 25 years of housebuilding in Treeton, South Yorkshire

Jones Homes is celebrating 25 years of housebuilding in Treeton as the company nears the end of a construction project which has delivered more than 400 new homes in the village across four developments. The housebuilder has built the final new homes at Beaumont Grange, a collection of 94 houses which comprises its fourth development to be completed in the village since the turn of the millennium. Jones Homes initially built new homes at Beaumont Park in Treeton, after securing planning permission in 1998. Since then, the company has also completed 92 homes at Arundel Park and 13 homes at Wood Lane. Beaumont Grange, off Wood Lane, featured three, four and five-bedroom properties, with 23 of the homes provided as affordable housing. Nine of these were starter homes, made available to purchase at a discount to their open market value.
