The Lancaster Canal runs right through, and its long lock-free stretch makes for easy towpath walks and gentle family cycling, with the Wyre Aqueduct carrying the water high above the river. Follow the River Wyre and you might spot herons and swans, even the odd otter. The ruins of 14th-century Greenhalgh Castle sit above the town, and the Forest of Bowland and Morecambe Bay are both a short drive away.
