Downsizing to a new bungalow was the right decision for Ken and Sue
For 50 years, Ken and Sue Medcalfe lived in the same three-bedroom house in Radcliffe, Bury.
But the couple, both in their 70s, decided their golden future lay in downsizing.
They moved to a brand new two-bedroom bungalow at Jones Homes’ Ribbleswood Chase development in Cottam, Preston, in August 2018, and a few months on can genuinely say they have no regrets.
Ken, a retired postman, said: “I’d been looking at bungalows occasionally online, for probably three or four years.
“But with bungalows, you often find people have lived in them before and they haven’t been updated.
“We wanted somewhere that didn’t need work.”
It was while he and Sue, a retired administrator, were at their daughter’s house in Chorley that they came across an advertisement for Ribbleswood Chase.
Ken said: “The bungalows looked nice and for two or three months the leaflet was behind our clock on the mantelpiece.
“Then one day we had nothing to do and I said to Sue ‘come on, let’s have a look’.
“As soon as we saw the place, we liked it.
“Even my wife, who hadn’t been as keen on the move as me, said ‘yes, I could live here’.”
Ribbleswood Chase turned out to be a small, 50-home development within an established part of Preston.
“It’s a nice estate and it backs on to Cottam Fields, which is a lovely area for walks,” said Ken.
“We didn’t want to be in the middle of a huge housing estate because that’s what we were leaving.
“The thing about downsizing is you get to the point where you should do it, and if you don’t do it then, it gets too late.
“Now we’re here, we love it.
“We can honestly say we did the right thing and we have no regrets.”
