Autumn on the north Kent coast

Autumn on the north Kent coast

North Kent has two peninsulas that many people have driven through. The Hoo Peninsula sits between the Thames and the Medway. The Isle of Sheppey lies just beyond it, across the Swale. Both are estuary country: seawalls, saltmarsh, enormous skies and very little between you and the horizon. And both come into their own in autumn, when around 250,000 waders and waterfowl arrive to spend the winter on the north Kent coast.

Jones Homes is proud to call both areas home. Abbots Grange at Hoo St Werburgh and Shurland Park bring new build homes in Kent to either side of the same landscape. Here's what the season looks like from each.

The north Kent coast in autumn

Estuary landscapes don't do drama, they do scale. The marshes run flat for miles, the light changes by the hour, and on a clear October morning you can see right across the water. The Saxon Shore Way threads through all of it, a 160-mile coastal path linking the two peninsulas, and it's at its best once the ground has firmed up and the summer haze has cleared. If you're looking at new build homes in Kent with real countryside on the doorstep, this is a very different proposition from the orchards and downland further south. It's wilder, quieter, and far less walked.

Autumn on the Hoo Peninsula

The Hoo Peninsula is where Kent turns properly wild. Cliffe Pools is a mosaic of lagoons and pools on the Thames shore, and from October the winter thrushes arrive and the wading birds gather in numbers, with dunlin and lapwing flocking through the colder months. A few miles east, Northward Hill rises above the marshes with woodland paths and long views out over the estuary.

There's history in the flat land too. Upnor Castle sits on the Medway shore, an Elizabethan gun fort you can reach on foot along the river. At Cooling, the churchyard at St James' is the one that opens Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, and it earns the detour on a grey afternoon far more than it does in July. For anyone considering new build homes in Hoo St Werburgh, all of this sits within a few minutes of the front door.

Autumn on the Isle of Sheppey

Across the water, Sheppey has the coast largely to itself once the season turns. The sheltered shore at Minster is sandy at low tide and backed by low cliffs, the sort of beach you end up walking most weekends without really planning to. Head east and Leysdown-on-Sea opens into a wide, gently shelving beach. Keep going to Shellness, a remote shingle spit where seabirds gather and seals haul out on the mudflats within sight of the shore.

Inland, Elmley Nature Reserve is one of the finest reserves in the country, and through autumn the marshes fill with lapwings, curlews, marsh harriers and short-eared owls hunting low over the grass. Queenborough's working tidal harbour is worth a slow wander, and Minster Abbey, founded in the seventh century and still in use, is a reminder that people have been settling here a very long time. It all adds up to a strong case for new builds in Minster on Sea.

New build homes in Kent at Abbots Grange and Shurland Park

The two developments sit at opposite ends of the same stretch of coast, and each suits a slightly different move.

Abbots Grange is our newest Kent development, at Hoo St Werburgh on the peninsula, within easy reach of Rochester, the marshes and the Medway towns. Shurland Park is on the northern side of Sheppey at Minster on Sea, minutes from the seafront with open marshland behind.

Both are finished to the standard you'd expect of a Jones home, and both are designed around providing the space for you and your family to grow. Our expert Sales Advisors can talk you through the home styles available at each. With more than 60 years of building behind us, we've learned that the setting does a great deal of the work, and the new homes for sale in Kent at these two developments have a setting that's hard to match.
