Barwick in Elmet is a picturesque village lying some 6 miles to the east of the bustling city of Leeds with its extensive arts, leisure, entertainment and shopping facilities, including Harvey Nichols first store outside London in the Historic Victoria Quarter. It has a history dating back over 2000 years to between 200-600 BC. The Domesday Book has a reference to an agricultural settlement at Barwick in Elmet in Norman times, with the Lordship of the Manor passing through marriage to the Duchy of Lancaster in the 14th century.
The village is noted for its Maypole raising and lowering, a public event, which takes place every three years. It is also known for the theme tune to The Archers, called "Barwick Green", written by Yorkshire composer, Arthur Wood in 1924 as a "Maypole Dance". The village has two churches, local shops, a post office, pubs and eateries.
Cross Gates Railway Station which lies on the York and Selby lines operates regular train services to Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and beyond York, Manchester, Manchester Airport and Middlesborough. Over time agriculture and mining have played a role in the village's development, whereas today it is predominantly a much sought after residential area with playing fields, tennis courts, bowling green, cricket pitch and football pitch built around quaint old streets and lanes surrounded by rolling countryside.
Barwick in Elmet is a very community spirited village and was the proud recipient of a "Britain in Bloom" Gold award. It has much to offer and Millers Croft presents a rare opportunity to acquire a brand new home in this beautiful village.
