Standish boasts a proud history dating back as far as 1178 when its name was formed by two Old English words 'stan' and 'edisc'. It was a typical manorial village with its manor court functioning at least up to the late 18th century. The life of the village was dominated by one resident gentry family, the Standishes. As a consequence of vast coal deposits the Standish collieries developed rapidly in the 1800s and at the turn of the century Standish was essentially a colliery village with the last working mine closing in 1963.
